Pilates studios are everywhere. But Clinical Pilates — the kind supervised by a qualified physiotherapist — is something fundamentally different. If you're managing an injury, recovering from surgery, or dealing with chronic pain, the distinction matters enormously.

What Is Regular Pilates?

Regular Pilates (mat or reformer) is a group exercise method focused on core strength, flexibility, posture, and body awareness. It's excellent for general fitness and is taught in studios and gyms across Australia. Instructors typically hold a Certificate III or IV in Pilates — a qualification that can be completed in a matter of weeks.

Regular Pilates classes involve a pre-set program delivered to a group of participants. Modifications exist for different fitness levels, but they don't account for specific clinical conditions.

What Is Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is Pilates supervised and prescribed by a qualified physiotherapist, who has a minimum four-year university degree in physiotherapy plus additional postgraduate training in Pilates methodology.

Before starting Clinical Pilates at Better Physiotherapy Bundoora, every patient undergoes a full physiotherapy assessment — including movement analysis, strength testing, and clinical diagnosis. Every exercise in your program is chosen based on that assessment, your injury history, and your specific goals.

Who Should Choose Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is particularly valuable for:

  • Back pain and spinal conditions (disc injuries, spondylolisthesis, chronic low back pain)
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction, incontinence, and pelvic girdle pain
  • Pregnancy and postnatal rehabilitation
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation (hip/knee replacement, spinal surgery, abdominal surgery)
  • Shoulder rehabilitation after rotator cuff repair or instability
  • Osteoporosis — safe, bone-loading exercises to reduce fracture risk
  • Neurological conditions (stroke, MS, Parkinson's) with movement rehabilitation goals
  • General deconditioning where standard exercise isn't yet appropriate

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is Pilates supervised and designed by a qualified physiotherapist. Unlike a regular Pilates class where everyone follows the same program, Clinical Pilates starts with a thorough clinical assessment of your posture, movement patterns, strength, and flexibility — and every exercise is chosen specifically to address your individual findings and goals.

Who should do Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is ideal for people recovering from injury (especially back, neck, shoulder, or pelvic conditions), those with chronic pain, post-surgical patients, pregnant and postnatal women, people with osteoporosis or arthritis, and anyone with specific physical goals that a generic class can't address.

Is Clinical Pilates covered by Medicare or private health insurance?

Clinical Pilates delivered by a physiotherapist may be claimable under your private health insurance Extras cover (physiotherapy category) or via a Medicare Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan. HICAPS is available on-site so rebates are processed instantly.

How is Clinical Pilates different from a reformer Pilates class at a studio?

At a commercial Pilates studio, instructors may hold a Certificate IV in Pilates — a qualification that takes weeks to complete. At Better Physiotherapy Bundoora, Clinical Pilates is led by an APPI-certified physiotherapist with a university degree in physiotherapy and additional postgraduate training. Every session is tailored to your specific clinical needs — not a generalised class program.
