Office work is Australia's most common occupation — and one of its most common sources of musculoskeletal pain. Neck pain, headaches, shoulder pain, and low back pain are so prevalent in desk workers that they are sometimes accepted as inevitable. They are not. Physiotherapy identifies and corrects the specific patterns causing your pain.

The Most Common Office Worker Conditions

  • Cervicogenic headaches: Neck-origin headaches from upper cervical joint dysfunction and suboccipital muscle tightness — extremely responsive to physiotherapy
  • Neck pain and upper trapezius tightness: From sustained forward head position and monitor height problems
  • Thoracic stiffness: Mid-back stiffness and aching from prolonged thoracic flexion in sitting
  • Shoulder impingement: From forward-rounded posture compressing the subacromial space
  • Lateral epicondylalgia: Elbow pain from repetitive mouse use — very common in right-handed computer users
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome: Median nerve compression from sustained wrist postures during keyboard use
  • Low back pain: Facet joint and disc loading from sustained lumbar flexion in sitting

What Physiotherapy Does for Office Workers

  • Assessment and treatment of the acute painful structure (manual therapy, dry needling, exercise)
  • Identification of the ergonomic and movement habit contributing factors
  • Targeted strengthening for the deficient muscles (deep neck flexors, lower trapezius, rotator cuff)
  • Workstation setup recommendations
  • Movement habit education — microbreak patterns and posture change strategies

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the "office worker" pain pattern?

Office workers typically develop a predictable pattern of muscle imbalance: tight and overactive upper trapezius, pectorals, and hip flexors; weak and underactive deep neck flexors, lower trapezius, serratus anterior, and gluteals. This pattern drives neck pain, shoulder pain, thoracic stiffness, and low back pain — all from the sustained posture demands of desk work.

How many breaks should I take from my desk?

Current evidence recommends breaking prolonged sitting every 30 minutes with at least 2–3 minutes of light movement (walking, stretching). "Microbreaks" of 30–60 seconds can also help. The goal is breaking the sustained tissue loading cycle — not achieving any particular movement, just movement variety and postural change.

Can physiotherapy help with headaches from desk work?

Yes. Cervicogenic headaches — originating from the upper cervical spine (C1–C3) — are extremely common in office workers and are highly responsive to physiotherapy. Cervical manual therapy (joint mobilisation and manipulation) combined with deep neck flexor strengthening can produce dramatic and lasting relief from headaches that haven't responded to medication.

Is sitting or standing at a desk better?

Alternating between both is best. Prolonged standing creates its own problems — lower limb fatigue, varicose veins, and increased lumbar loading in some individuals. A sit-stand desk allows variation. Current guidance suggests aiming for roughly equal amounts of sitting and standing, with regular movement breaks regardless of position.
