Study-Related Conditions
Neck and Upper Back Pain
Prolonged laptop use and study sessions are one of the most common causes of cervical and thoracic pain in young adults. The combination of sustained forward head posture, reduced movement, and screen height creates significant cervical and thoracic loading. Physiotherapy typically resolves study-related neck pain very quickly — often in 2–4 sessions.
Lower Back Pain
Sitting for extended periods in library chairs and desk spaces loads the lumbar spine. Lower back pain is increasingly common in students under 25. An ergonomic assessment of your study setup combined with physiotherapy treatment and targeted exercises resolves most cases rapidly.
Wrist and Forearm Pain
Prolonged typing, mouse use, and note-taking can cause forearm extensor tendinopathy and wrist pain. These conditions respond well to physiotherapy and activity modification — and catching them early prevents months of chronic pain.
Sports Injuries at La Trobe
La Trobe Bundoora has excellent sports facilities and an active UniSport competition calendar. Ankle sprains, knee injuries, shoulder injuries, and hamstring strains are the most common presentations during competition seasons. We see many La Trobe students and can often offer same-day appointments for acute sports injuries.
How to Access Affordable Physiotherapy as a Student
Medicare EPC (Bulk Billing)
If you have a chronic condition and a GP has referred you under a Medicare Care Plan (also called an EPC or Team Care Arrangement), you can receive up to 5 fully bulk-billed physiotherapy sessions per calendar year. To access this: book an appointment with a GP, ask about a Care Plan, and bring the referral to us.
Private Health Insurance
Many students are still on their parents' private health insurance or hold their own. Most Extras policies cover a portion of physiotherapy fees. We use HICAPS for on-the-spot claiming — you only pay the gap.
OSHC
International students with Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) may have limited physiotherapy coverage — check your policy for details.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the most common injuries in university students?
The most common conditions we see in university students are: neck and upper back pain from prolonged study posture and laptop use, lower back pain, sports injuries (the UniSport competition season generates a predictable wave of ankle sprains, knee injuries, and shoulder injuries), stress-related muscle tension headaches, and repetitive strain from typing and mouse use.
Is it normal to have back pain from studying?
Very common — but not something you should accept as normal. Prolonged sitting in poor posture loads the lumbar spine and cervical spine. Study-related back pain typically responds very quickly to physiotherapy — usually within 2–4 sessions of manual therapy, postural advice, and a targeted exercise program.
I hurt myself playing university sport. What should I do?
See a physiotherapist as early as possible — within 24–72 hours for acute injuries (sprains, strains). Early accurate diagnosis and management produces the fastest recovery and return to sport. For injuries during official UniSport competitions, check whether your sports association has any injury coverage.
Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist at Better Physio Bundoora?
No referral is needed to book and attend physiotherapy. You can book directly online or by phone. If you want bulk-billing under a Medicare EPC plan, you will need to see your GP first to obtain a Care Plan, but you don't need a referral for private appointments.
