If you have been injured in a motor vehicle accident in Victoria, you are entitled to physiotherapy treatment funded by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) — Victoria's no-fault transport accident insurance scheme. Better Physiotherapy Bundoora accepts TAC patients and bills the TAC directly.

What Is the TAC?

The Transport Accident Commission is the Victorian Government body that compensates people injured in transport accidents. Victoria's transport accident scheme is no-fault — meaning you can claim regardless of who caused the accident. It covers treatment costs, income replacement, and other support for eligible claimants.

How to Access TAC Physiotherapy — Step by Step

  1. Report the accident to the TAC (1300 654 329) as soon as possible. You will receive a claim number.
  2. See your GP for a medical examination and Certificate of Capacity, which documents your injuries and authorises treatment.
  3. Book a physiotherapy appointment at Better Physiotherapy Bundoora. Bring your TAC claim number and GP referral.
  4. We bill TAC directly. You should not have any out-of-pocket cost for reasonable and necessary treatment.

Common TAC Physiotherapy Presentations

  • Whiplash (WAD I–IV): The most common road accident injury. Neck pain, stiffness, headaches, and upper limb symptoms following rapid neck flexion/extension. Early physiotherapy is strongly associated with better outcomes and lower risk of chronic whiplash.
  • Lower back injuries: Disc injuries, facet joint sprains, and soft tissue injuries from the impact
  • Shoulder injuries: Rotator cuff tears and shoulder impingement from seatbelt or airbag impact
  • Fracture rehabilitation: Post-fracture physiotherapy to restore movement and strength
  • Concussion rehabilitation: Post-concussion vestibular physiotherapy and graduated return to activity

The Importance of Early Treatment

Research consistently shows that early physiotherapy after road accident injuries — particularly whiplash — produces significantly better long-term outcomes. Patients who receive early, active physiotherapy are far less likely to develop chronic pain than those who rest and wait. Do not wait until the pain "settles" — book as soon as your GP clears you for physiotherapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What injuries are covered by TAC physiotherapy?

TAC covers physiotherapy for injuries arising from a transport accident including whiplash, back and neck injuries, shoulder injuries, fracture rehabilitation, soft tissue injuries, concussion rehabilitation, and post-surgical rehab for injuries caused by the accident.

Do I pay anything for TAC physiotherapy?

For accepted TAC claims, physiotherapy is billed directly to the TAC — you should not have any out-of-pocket cost for treatment that is reasonable and necessary for your injury. Any gap charges are rare and should be discussed with your physiotherapist.

What if my TAC claim is disputed?

If your claim is disputed or TAC has not yet accepted liability, you may need to pay initially and seek reimbursement later. We can provide detailed clinical notes and records to support your claim. Contact the TAC or a legal adviser if you encounter difficulties.

Can I choose my own physiotherapist under TAC?

Yes. You can choose any registered physiotherapist in Victoria. You do not need to see the physiotherapist nominated by the insurer.
